Free Saju × Astrology

Saju (사주, "four pillars") is Korean destiny reading. Your birth year, month, day and hour each form a pillar of two characters, and together they show the elements you were born with.

If your city is not listed, pick the nearest one. It is used for your rising and moon signs.

What is saju?

Saju (사주, "four pillars") is the traditional Korean way of reading destiny from your birth. Your year, month, day and hour of birth each become a pillar made of two characters: a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. Four pillars with two characters each give eight characters, which is why Koreans also call it saju palja (사주팔자), "four pillars, eight characters".

Every character belongs to one of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. A saju reading looks at which elements you have plenty of, which are missing, and how they feed or challenge each other. The most important character is your day master, the top of your day pillar, because it represents you.

Saju in Korean life

In Korea, saju is part of everyday culture. People check it at the new year, before a wedding, when choosing a baby's name or a business opening date, and saju cafes in neighborhoods like Hongdae offer readings over coffee. Couples even compare their saju to see how well they match, called gunghap (궁합).

How is it different from Western astrology?

Western astrology reads the positions of the planets at your birth. Saju reads the cycle of time itself, using a calendar of 60 stem and branch combinations. Both describe your nature and timing, so many people enjoy comparing the two.

FAQ

Is saju the same as Chinese astrology?

They share roots. Saju grew from the Chinese four pillars system (BaZi), and Koreans have used it for centuries in their own way. It is much more than your zodiac animal, which comes from only one of the eight characters.

Why is the day master important?

The top character of your day pillar is your day master. It represents you, and a saju reading looks at how the other characters relate to it.

What if I do not know my birth time?

The other three pillars still show your core nature and element balance. A full reading is more precise with the hour.
